Wellness Kitchens boast 7 zones of focus for maximum benefits.

ZONE 1: Delivery
How food is delivered to the home is key in the battle of the bulge. Traditionally we are conditioned to accept pre-packed,
preserved, over-packaged and nutrient-deficient food. Too many packages leak their toxins into the food that we eat. So, we get a healthy dose of that too. That seems pretty contradictory to the Farm-To-Table and Farmers Market movement. Going organic seems challenging in the face of tradition.

Wellness Kitchens are set up for a different approach. They cut the distance between the farm and your table down to a lot size. Your lot! Appliances like the Urban Cultivator make it super easy to grow your own nutrient-packed greens at home. You will know exactly what chemicals have been added because you are the only one who adds them....or don't. They help reduce food waste because you can cut as you need it instead of letting the extra rot in the fridge. Your home is designed around a dated atrium? No problem. Convert it to an indoor or hydroponic garden like this one from Tower Garden. You will be ready to open up your own farmer's market. Where to store the abundance? Storage has evolved too.

ZONE 2: Storage
Cabinets are joining California's fight against food waste. How does that help your waistline? Healthy eating habits are encouraged because now that product that you just picked up from the local farmer's market is in the line of sight. Living food is kept alive or dormant (instead of dead) in temperature and humidity-controlled cupboards. Some even come with running water and glass front doors. It is important to see the foods that are diet-friendly first and indulgence foods behind solid doors. More interior designers like Veronica Iconica (featured to the right) are designing beautiful and modern wellness kitchens with humidity-controlled cabinets. Waste not want not.

ZONE 3: Preparation
Before making changes to my traditional kitchen half the food prep was the packaging! A large part of this challenge is addressed in zones 1 and 2. A "happy accident" for me was the weight of guilt that was lifted when I stopped contributing so much waste to landfills. Thank you kitchen!

Did you know: As of 2013, Californians disposed of an estimated 4.4 pounds / person / day, resulting in disposal of approximately 30.2 million tons per year. LEARN MORE...

The rest of the food prep in-efficiency was based on the outdated layout of my traditional kitchen. Wellness Kitchens boast thoughtful layouts that have multiple food prep "stations". This works as easily on a small scale as it does in a luxury kitchen size. Of course, the smaller the kitchen, the more critical it is to use an interior designer to use every square inch to its maximum potential. This makes zone four a cinch. Everything you need is right at your fingertips without having to be hauled across the kitchen.

ZONE 4: Cooking
Food prepared for wellness is different from the indifference of traditional appliances. Microwaves zap away nutrients as well as often times cooking un-evenly. Meat can be undercooked in some places while overcooked in others. To cook food in a way that preserves its optimal nutrients requires a few different appliances. Combi steam ovens are a favorite. I often promote their convenience and ability to produce nutritious food. The convection aspect allows for speed and reduced energy. The steam keeps those vitamins and minerals dense. Gas ranges are great. Add a juicer for those healing and immune-boosting juices. A kitchen that promotes vitamin-rich food that tastes amazing is aces!

ZONE 5: Disposal

This relates to Zone 3. I can fill my trashcan to nearly half sometimes just cooking one meal because of all of the packaging. I am all for using reusable grocery bags and I am all for reusable containers too! Some grocery stores are even willing to let you bring in your own container for the deli. It's another reason why Farmers Market is so good. Unpackaged fresh food and re-usable containers keep trash down. Often times in these kitchens you will find bins for compost neatly tucked into the island for easy cleanup. We can get excited about products like Zera hitting the market. Whirpool is leveling up food waste transformation by creating a kitchen device that turns out fertilizer. Producing too much for a personal garden? Donate it to your local community garden.

ZONE 6: Consumption
Weight Loss support has arrived from the kitchen. Using our visual touchpoint as a cue, glass panel refrigerators help you see what is good for you to eat. In an effort to help you reduce food waste, you can keep an eye on the food that needs to be eaten sooner rather than later. How many of us clutter our fridge pushing containers to the back only to have the "never-been-opened" contents rot, leaving a goopy mess? These glass panel refrigerators regulate the humidity and keep food fresher longer without compromising their nutritional value. The Monogram series by GE carries a beautiful selection of refrigerators to choose from. Take a look at the "wow" factor.

ZONE 7: Social Activity
Wellness Kitchens include mental and emotional wellness too! With time at a premium, including time with our friends and family, the kitchen layout plays a significant role in bringing everyone together. Open layouts and connected stations allow you to work and play together. Conversations are easy to have whether you getting some paperwork or meal prep done.
The Covid-19 virus, aka "Corona Virus", is just one of the many catalysts for change. So many of us are looking to our homes as Home-Health_Hubs where we can boost our immune systems, detox from environmental pollution, increase our overall vitality, as well as rejuvenate from work and social stress. Part of wellness design is considering healthy lighting that regulates our circadian rhythm so that our bodies are getting proper rest and using natural signals to wake up. Air filtration systems that sift out toxins and metals are improving our resistance to allergies and other conditions from poor air quality. Thanks to products like HALO, your entire home water system is filtered. It doesn't matter whether you are drinking from the tap or washing up in the shower. The water coming through your pipes is free of dissolved gasses, chlorides, and metal ions. Imagine how healthy, safe and protected your home could be. It all starts with the heart of the home, the kitchen.
